Let’s Chat A Little While – Chores

Two years ago, I had this idea to write a blog to connect with other grand raising grands. A friend made a comment at that time that it wouldn’t go very far because there aren’t many in “my situation”. Here I am today with a determination of unstoppable passion to make this work. I was born to help people. I know that is my intended purpose from God. Stay on this journey with me and participate in various topics every week. If you have a suggestion for one or more topics, please leave a comment or send me an email at [email protected].

Chores. How Many? Payment?

How long after your grands came to you did you introduce chores? I started serious chores just this year. He is 6 now and is understanding the concept of money and consequences of not following through on his work.

How many chores do you assign each child and to what level of challenge? I assign no more than 6 chores. Every day includes brushing teeth! Homework Monday through Thursday. Reading a book three nights a week. Cleaning his room when needed. Getting his clothes ready for the next day. I add free days when I let him skip that chore for the night. Always on the last day I ask if he was nice and used his manners all week. I take away 10 cent for each time he is disrespectful, or sass mouthed. We change the 6th chore to his choice, that he can complete, so it stays random.

How much does your child or children earn weekly for completing chores? He has the potential to earn $10.00 a week. He also has a chart showing the lower amounts he will receive if all chores are not done in time or completely.

Which chore chart do you prefer to use? Erasable? Velcro? I chose to order one from Amazon. Amazon.com: Magnetic Reward Chart, Dry Erase Kids Behavior Responsibility Task Board-84 Chores (Including 7 Blanks), 272 Magnetic Stars, 8 Markers & 3 Name Cards-Good Behavior Daily Routine to Motivate Kids : Office Products It is great and keeps him busy trying to narrow down his choices. He loves to put the stars on himself before bed each night. Prior to receiving that one I used a template design from Word and let him write his own words (sneaky way for Nana to make him practice letters too…lol)

How do you handle removing stars earned or reducing rewards earned following bad behavior? Do you give any leniency or do-overs? So far pointing out the reduction of money he has earned is working. He will be sent to remove stars unless he apologizes for his behavior and that is sooooo dramatic for him, he usually draws a note to say I’m sorry. Bless his heart
